Guwahati: Assam disaster management minister Jogen Mohan on Friday announced Rs 2 lakh aid to the family of Sumitra Rabha, who was killed after being swept away by the water that gushed of the pipeline of the South Central Guwahati water project at Kharghuli on Thursday. He also announced Rs 10,000 to each of the injured persons to be paid within 48 hours.
The minister, who visited the site of the incident on Friday, said it was an accident and the district administration along with all the departments concerned have been working relentlessly to ensure payment of compensation. “The financial assistance would be given to the injured people and the family of the deceased under the disaster management fund. However, the matter of giving compensation to the people for the losses they incurred will be taken up with the chief minister,” he added.
The minister said something must have gone wrong while welding the pipe which has resulted in such an accident where a woman died, several others were injured, and houses and vehicles damaged.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA of Gauhati East assembly constituency Siddhartha Bhattacharya, who also visited the site, said the incident was a consequence of criminal negligence. “The incident must be probed thoroughly to find out the reasons and the guilty. The families, who have incurred losses in terms of property damage, must be given compensation as per law,” he added.
Senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia took stock of the people at the relief camp set up near the incident site on Friday. He said the government must order a judicial inquiry into the case so that an impartial probe can take place and the guilty can be punished.
“How could there be loopholes after taking more than a decade to complete the project? It was negligence. The state government as well as the departments concerned should ensure that no such incident takes place in the city again,” he added.
Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, who is the head of the district disaster management authority, has directed the officials to take all measures to provide food and shelter to the affected people.
