Coimbatore: Meena Loganathan (ward 46), Ilakummi Izhamselvi Karthik (ward 52) and Nivetha Senathipathi (ward 97) are the front runners for the mayoral post of the Coimbatore Corporation, according to sources in DMK. All the three emerged victorious from the general wards, though 50% of wards were allotted for women candidates in the corporation.
If selected by the party high command, one of them will make history by becoming the first woman mayor of the city corporation.
While Meena Loganathan and Ilakkumi Izhamselvi had served as councillors, 22-year-old Nivetha is a fresh face.
Meena Loganathan entered electoral politics after quitting the teaching profession. A postgraduate in Tamil, she climbed up the ladder in the local party circle without much backing from her family. She was elected as councillor for the city corporation in two terms – 2006 and 2016.
She was once man-handled and thrown out of the council for raising questions against the ruling party.
While she unsuccessfully contested for the Coimbatore north assembly seat in 2016 elections, she has now won hands down by defeating 13 opponents, all of them lost their deposits.
She is staying put in Chennai at present trying her luck for the mayoral post.
Meena Loganathan said, “I have been a cadre of the party for a long time. I was active in party activities even when we were in opposition, particularly when former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was in power. I believe that ‘Thalapathy’ will choose a hard worker like me.”
Ilakkumi Izhamselvi has become a councillor of the city corporation for the second time. Wife of former Singanallur MLA and former deputy mayor of city corporation N Karthik, she is hopeful of getting the mayoral post. She had registered her victory from ward 52 by getting 69% of the total votes polled in the ward. “Our leader (Stalin) will take a call on the mayor post. I will accept whatever decision he takes,” she had told TOI earlier.
Nivetha Senathipathy was doing her MA Psychology before entering the election fray. She did not take much time to grasp the nuances of electoral politics. She had collected grievances petitions from the ward members and assured them of setting them right in 100 days. Daughter of DMK east district in-charge Maruthamalai Senathipathy, Nivedha won the election with the highest margin of 7,786 votes in the city. While Senathipathy was denied ticket to contest in the assembly segment election last year, he is expecting the plum post for his daughter. Nivetha too maintained that she will accept the orders of the party high command.
When the announcement for the urban local body election was made, DMK’s Coimbatore women’s wing deputy secretary Meena Jayakumar was seen as a potential mayoral candidate for the city corporation. However, she didn’t get a ticket to contest in the election, leaving many shocked.
Former chairman of Vadavalli town panchayat Amirthavalli Shanmugasundaram, who contested from ward 38, was also touted as a mayoral candidate but she lost to Sharmila Chandrasekar of AIADMK.
