Coimbatore: Officials of the Coimbatore forest division on Monday arrested two people for possession of unlicensed guns.
Frontline staff and anti-poaching watchers of the Sirumugai forest range, who were conducting night patrol in villages on forest fringes on Monday morning, had spotted a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on Sathyamangalam – Mettupalayam Road around 1.30am. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped away. The frontline staff chased the vehicle and intercepted it at Kovilmedu. Three people managed to escape into the forest. But the officials caught driver K Lakshmanan, 33, of Omalur in Salem and K Mani, 28, of Arisipalayam in Salem.
The duo was taken to the office of the range officer in Sirumugai, where they were grilled. “They told us that they came to the reserve forest to hunt deer and wild boars. We seized two single barrel guns and three bullets from the vehicle,” an official said. “We registered a case and arrested them. They were remanded in judicial custody.”
A special team has been formed to nab three absconding people.
