Coimbatore: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials arrested four fliers from Sharjah at the city airport on Thursday for smuggling gold worth 2.59 crore.
A DRI official said they had specific intelligence that the four – 34-year-old Uma from Coimbatore city, 23-year-old B Bharathi from Cuddalore, 26-year-old B Thirumoorthy from Thanjavur and 29-year-old P Vignesh Ganapathy from Trichy – were smuggling nearly 5kg gold from Sharjah.
“When they landed at the city on Air Arabia Flight on Thursday morning, we checked them thoroughly. While Uma concealed the gold in her knee cap, others hid it in jeans pants and underwear,” the official said.
The official said they had registered a case and arrested the four. “They were let off on conditional bail later. The men were working with the construction industry in Sharjah for the past two years. Uma visited Sharjah a month ago to meet her relative. They were given free tickets for smuggling the gold. Further investigation is on.” tnn
