To defeat the demon Tarakasura, Lord Shiva had to bear a son but at the time when he had lost his wife, Sati, he went into a meditative state. The lords had then instructed the God of lust, sensuality and love, Kama to shoot arrows of lust into Shiva. Angered by this intrusion, Shiva opened his third eye and burned Kama. Rati, the wife of Kama was devastated by this. However, Shiva realised his mistake and said that he’ll bring back Kama to life but in a bodiless form. However, Kama and Rati’s love extended to generations as they were later reincarnated to be married once again.
