Silchar: CRPF deputy inspector general (DIG) (Silchar Range) Shahnawaz Khan has claimed that a peaceful atmosphere has been prevailing along the Assam-Mizoram border areas in Cachar district after the force’s jawans were deployed last year as per the Centre’s instructions
Khan, who attended an event at Lailapur CRPF camp in Cachar district near Mizoram border on Friday, said a miasma of fear and panic hovered for many days in the area after seven Assam policemen were killed on July 26 last year, but the situation now is normal. Peace was restored after CRPF personnel were deployed following that incident as per the instructions of the central government, he said.
At the event, Khan distributed 78 solar lights to the people of both Assam and Mizoram. Debashish Biswas, commandant, 147 CRPF battalion camp, Y Nanda Kishore, second commandant, R K Yadav, assistant commandant, Khulicherra CRPF camp, and Young Mizo Association president Jalota were also present.
Meanwhile, former MLA from Barkhola, Rumi Nath, met the CRPF officials at Lailapur and alleged that residents of Mizoram have been constructing a new village on Assam land. She told the officers that a number of houses have already been built in Cachar near the inter-state border by Mizos. However, CRPF personnel who are deployed along the border as a neutral force to maintain law and order have not taken any step to stop such construction, she alleged.
