Coimbatore: As many as 100 police personnel, including 30 women, from Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts, had a harrowing experience in Coimbatore when they were brought to the city for security duty in the aftermath of the car bomb blast that took place on October 23.
“Following the car blast reported on early Sunday morning (October 23), we were asked to rush to Coimbatore. We travelled to Coimbatore in two buses with only one set of uniforms as we were told that we will be sent back within two days by the officials,” a policeman told TOI. “During our stay in Coimbatore, we were not provided with food and basic amenities by the Coimbatore city police. We have to spend on our own for food,” he alleged.
Policewomen were deployed for duty at the Classic Tower Junction near the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital during the day and night hours. But there were no toilet facilities and the policewomen were forced to use the open place near Valankulam, one of the policewomen said. “Else, we had to walk to the railway station,” she added.
“We were asked to stay in a hall belonging to a temple at New Siddhapudur. On Thursday morning (October 29), the temple management asked us to vacate the hall. We were then shifted to a wedding hall on Avinashi Road, where there were no basic amenities. So, we demanded the officials to send us back to our hometown,” a policeman from Vellore said.
Later, the cops were shifted to the barracks of the city armed reserve police on the Police Recruits School premises on Thursday night.
