SHIMLA: BJP expelled Tuesday its Himachal Pradesh vice president Ram Singh for pitting himself against the party nominee in the upcoming assembly elections by filing his nomination as an independent candidate for the Kullu seat. This was BJP’s sixth crackdown in two days against rebel candidates, notably Ram Singh who was denied a ticket to run for office.
Four former MLAs and an ex-MP were expelled Monday for contesting as independents from different constituencies — Tejwant Singh Negi from Kinnaur; Kishori Lal from Anni (SC); Manohar Dhiman, from Indora (SC); KL Thakur from Nalagarh; and former MP Kripal Parmar from Fatehpur.
Ram Singh is contesting against Narottam Thakur, the party’s official candidate for Kullu.
Earlier, BJP functionary Maheshwar Singh had filed his nominations as an independent for Kullu, but the party leadership managed to persuade him to withdraw. The leadership had approached Ram Singh as well, but he refused to take back his nomination.
CM Jai Ram Thakur’s government had appointed Ram Singh as vice chairman of HPMC, but he rebelled on being denied a ticket for the assembly elections.
