COIMBATORE: A gang murdered a man in Coimbatore on Friday night after he dared his opponents by posting on Instagram a photo of him holding a sickle.
The deceased has been identified as K Ashok Kumar, 26, of Hudco Colony. He was a construction worker. He was married to Kawsalya and had a three-year-old daughter, police said.
Ashok Kumar recently posted on Instagram a photo of him holding a sickle. The photo had a North Chennai gaana song — glorifying rowdyism –as background music. In the post, he dared his opponents to visit his area.
Ashok Kumar had a previous enmity with Manikandan, Shanmugam and his friends.
Shanmugam and his friends were consuming liquor in a bar on Friday night. Ashok Kumar went there. On seeing Ashok Kumar, they picked up a quarrel with him over his social media post. While a dispute ensued, a few people intervened and brokered peace.
Ashok Kumar left the place. Shanmugam and his friends Shiva, Babu and Amarnath followed him and intercepted him near his house. They again picked up a quarrel with him. They took out sharp weapons and started attacking Ashok Kumar. He suffered injuries on his chest, head and hand.
He was rushed to a private hospital from where he was referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. CMCH doctors declared that he was brought dead.
A police team from the Saravanampatti station rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry. Based on a complaint from Ashok Kumar’s wife, a case was registered. A team was formed to nab the suspects.
