Coimbatore: The city corporation is in the process of modernizing the key markets in its limits. The civic body has roped in Chennai-based STG Consultancy to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the same.
Engineers with the consultancy firm completed preliminary inspection of the markets in the presence of corporation engineers and respective ward councillors on Wednesday and Thursday.
The markets that were inspected included Anna Market, MGR Market, Gandhipuram Market, Ukkadam Market and other smaller markets located at Chinnavedampatti, Thudiyalur, Gandhi Maa Nagar and Sundarapuram.
“The DPR will be made based on the inputs given by the traders, consumers and the respective ward councillors. At present, most of the markets lack basic amenities. New infrastructures will be created to change this situation and meet other modern requirements,” an official with the engineering wing of the corporation said.
He said the STP Consultancy had worked on designing various markets in the state. “Each market is different and a separate plan will be drawn for us.”
P S Saravana Kumar, councillor from ward 69, said shops at Anna Market were set up on the ground. “The entire market becomes slushy when it rains, and shops could not be set up. Concrete structures should be built for shops. Only 470 shops are set up on average in Anna Market now. If proper structures were to be built, the market can house 600 shops, fetching an additional revenue of 2.5 crore a year for the corporation.”
Welcoming the move to prepare the DPR, Saravana said he had requested the corporation commissioner and the mayor to develop the markets in his maiden speech at the corporation council meeting earlier this month.
The councillor said MGR Market required proper roads and other facilities. “New shops should be allocated to the farmers and educated unemployed youths. The corporation could get 25 crore additional revenue, if all the markets in the city were developed to meet the present-day requirements.”
