Hubballi: Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar said that there was a need to create awareness among parents promote education in the mother tongue.
At a gathering in Hubballi before flagging off the Rajyotsava procession by the HDMC on Tuesday, he said that people in north Karnataka have a greater love for the language.“Hindi is not being imposed forcibly. The Prime Minister and home minister have clarified this already. There is no need for fear about Hindi,” he said.
The craze for English-medium education was on the rise, he said. Awareness should be created among parents to change their mentality, and basic infrastructure in Kannada schools should be upgraded, he added.
MLA Prasad Abbayya asked HDMC to ensure that all shops have their boards in Kannada. The government should grant in aid to more Kannada-medium schools, he added.
Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri, Deputy Mayor Uma Mukund, HDMC Commissioner Gopal Krishna B and others were present.
