NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to use five crore doses of Biological E’s Corbevax — that are likely to arrive by end of February — for adolescents in age group of 12-15 years, once the vaccine gets final approval for use in youngsters above 12 years of age, an official source said.
The drug regulator’s subject expert committee recently recommended Corbevax for use in 12-18 years’ old. The final approval from the Drugs Controller General of India for emergency use in this category is expected shortly. The vaccine has already been given emergency authorisation for use in adults.
The Centre has also placed a purchase order for five crore doses of Corbevax. While batches of the vaccines have been cleared by the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) Kasauli, supplies are expected to arrive by end of February.
“The vaccine will most likely be used to expand vaccination among youngsters above 12 years age. However, this decision will follow only after NTAGI’s recommendations,” the official said.
