Guwahati: The city has been decked up with a new coat of paint on the dividers and roads, new lights and colourful flags for the three-day visit of President Ram Nath Kovind from Friday while state police have beefed up security.
After his arrival in Guwahati, Kovind will visit Kamakhya temple. At 5.30 pm, he will inaugurate the year-long celebration of the 400th birth anniversary of great Ahom general Lachit Borphukan at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.
He will also lay the foundation of the war memorial of Alaboi battle at Dadara in Kamrup and the project to revamp the cremation ground of Lachit on a 22-bigha plot near Jorhat in upper Assam.
Joint commissioner of police PS Mahanta said, “All security measures have been taken for the President’s visit. The traffic routes have also been diverted in a few parts of the city on Friday and Saturday for smooth management during his visit. A huge number of police personnel and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the city. Patrolling and checking have already been intensified.”
Restrictions have been imposed on plying of commercial vehicles on NH-17, NH-27, Assam Trunk Road, MG Road, Taybullah Road, GNB Road, B Baruah Road, Guwahati-Shillong Road and Panjabari Road during different periods of time. Inter-district buses run by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) will not be allowed to enter the city from Jalukbari and diverted to the inter-state bus terminal at Garchuk. However, emergency services have been exempted from the restrictions.
Meanwhile, Guwahati Municipal Corporation has left no stone unturned to give a new look to the city with touch-up of streets and walls. Artists of the College of Art and Craft in Basistha have painted the flyover walls at Khanapara giving it an attractive look. The artists also painted the walls around the Assam Public Service Commission office.
