NEW DELHI: Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday requested the Supreme Court not to reconsider its 2018 decision to impose Rs 1,000 fine on him for an assault case of December 1988 in which the injured person had died.
The SC had issued notice to Sidhu only on the quantum of sentence on a review petition filed by relatives of the deceased. It had clarified that it would not enter into the exercise of determining whether the offence should be 304-II or 323 of the IPC. Sidhu was tried under IPC Section 302 but was acquitted by the trial court. However, the Punjab and Haryana HC had in 2007 convicted him under 304-II and sentenced to three-year jail. The SC, in 2018, had con- verted the offence to voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 and fined him Rs 1,000.
“I had an impeccable political and sporting career in the last three decades. I faced trial between 1994 and 1999 and abided by all directions. . . Against the order of acquittal, an appeal was preferred by the state and the complainant, whereupon the Punjab and Haryana HC had set aside the order,” Sidhu said.
