Hubballi/ Ballari:: Twin cities’ police on Saturday took into custody Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) corporator Nazeer Ahmed Honval of AIMIM in connection with the recent communal disturbance in Old Hubballi.
Nazeer Ahmed is the second AIMIM functionary who is being interrogated for his alleged role in the unrest – police had earlier arrested Irfan Nalatwad, a party leader and AIMIM corporator Husenbi Nalatwad’s husband.
Nazeer Ahmed has been detained on charges of inciting the mob on the night of April 16. Police said that they would arrest the corporator only if the charges against him turned out to be true.
Karnataka BJP general secretary Mahesh Tenginkai, meanwhile, visited the Diddi Hanuman temple and the Old Hubballi police station, which were damaged during the communal clashes. The BJP functionary said that City Congress unit president Altaf Hallur, among other functionaries of the opposition party, were witnesses to the incident. “They know the miscreants involved in the riots. They must cooperate with police by registering separate cases in connection with the incident,” Tenginkai said.
Tenginkai suspected that the entire episode had been planned in advance. “The rioters damaged police and other government vehicles, in addition to the temple and surrounding houses in such a short span of time. Police have arrested only 140 people so far, but thousands were involved in the riots,” the BJP functionary alleged.
Tenginkai was accompanied by party colleagues Lingaraj Patil, Tippanna Majjagi, Sanjay Kapatkar, Narayan Jartarghar, Dattamurthy Kulkarni and Ravi Naik among others.
Cong is behind riots: Sriramulu
Congress is responsible for communal violence in the state is the election year, said transport minister B Sriramulu.
Speaking to reporters in Ballari on Saturday, he said: “Congress leaders are behind the riots in KG Halli, DG Halli, Hubballi, and other parts of the state. They have been involved in such violence acts as they are sure of not coming to power after the 2023 assembly elections. Opposition party leaders are sowing seeds of poison between Hindus and Muslims. People of the state should be wary of such leaders,” he said.
To a query, the minister said the recently held core committee meeting did not discuss G Janardan Reddy’s return to active politics, “We will follow the party’s stand in this regard,” he said.
