Coimbatore: BJP national women’s wing president Vanathi Srinivasan has urged the election commission to send away DMK men, who have come to Coimbatore from Karur district for poll work.
The men are not only involved in bribing voters but are also threatening other party cadres in Coimbatore, she told reporters on Wednesday. “We complained to the election commission multiple times that DMK men, particularly those from Karur district, were distributing gifts and cash to voters in Coimbatore. Flying squads come late to the spots. Even when we catch hold of those bribing voters, no action is being taken against them,” she said.
There were two instances of bribing of voters in ward 70, which were prevented on Tuesday, Vanathi said. “We have given written complaints regarding the incidents,” she said, adding that there were instances of clashes between cadres of BJP and other political parties with those who were caught bribing. “But when we question officials about the action taken against them, officials just say inquiry is on. Worse, in some places, our cadres say police facilitate in bribing of voters by DMK men,”
The ruling DMK, which was unable to win even one seat in the assembly elections in Coimbatore, is desperate to win in the urban local body elections, the BJP leader said. “Even as the election commission took steps to prevent distribution of cash and gifts to voters, the officials should take immediate steps to oust Karur men from Coimbatore.”
“DMK leaders said that chief minister M K Stalin was giving special attention to Coimbatore. But their actions are quite opposite. Water level in Siruvani dam has gone down and the threat of water shortage, even before summer sets in, is looming large. But DMK has not bothered to talk to Kerala and ensure adequate water to be stored in Siruvani dam,” Vanathi said. “Rather than working on welfare projects, they are taking last-ditch efforts through shortcuts to win the polls.”
