Vijayapura: A group of friends from Masabinal in the Basavana Bagewadi taluk have established a library to promote reading habit among students and support them to prepare for competitive exams. Their gesture is especially significant at a time when education in schools and colleges has been hampered for various reasons in the past two years.
The group Geleyara Balaga has about 150 members including teachers, police officers, journalists, panchayat members, and other professionals from across the state. They have contributed to the establishment of the Jnanajyoti Geleyara Balaga Library. They have requested netizens to donate books to the library.
Basalingayya Hiremath, a member of Geleyara Balaga, said that initially they were involved in sports, cultural, cleaning, and social activities in the village. “At one point, we realised that they were all for short-term results and that we should do something for long-term results, such as planning a good future for village students. When the idea of establishing a library was pitched, each of us contributed a sum ranging from Rs 5,000 to 20,000,” he added.
Prakash Nandi, Siddaling Bagewadi and Shami Ulla Sayyed said that the Masabinal has contributed to India’s freedom fight in a significant way. Shivanand Math in the village is a spiritual centre. “Now we want to make village as knowledge centre. When we floated the idea of setting up a library, many people have come forward to contribute to the cause. As of now, we have got books, furniture and other items worth of Rs 2 lakh,” they explained.
Shivakumar Muchhandi and Anand Rathod informed that BB Patil, a retired DSP in Hubballi who hails from the village, has donated 22 chairs worth of Rs 25,000 and books worth of Rs 10,000. “Gram panchayat officials have provided the space in their building for a nominal rent,” they said.
Inspired by their initiative, many netizens are sending books to the library, they added. Siddharam Mahaswami of Shivanand Math, Masabinal, and Shivaprakash Shivacharya of Hiremath, Basavana Bagewadi, who inaugurated the library recently, said that this is a knowledge revolution taken up by Masabinal villagers. “This will yield fruitful results and turn into a model initiative for other villages,” they opined.
