Guwahati/Ahmedabad: Independent Gujarat MLA from Vadgam and dalit leader, Jignesh Mevani was arrested by Assam police late on Wednesday for allegedly posting “inciting tweets” and “inciting enmity between communities”.
Later a local court in Assam’s Kokrajhar district rejected his bail plea and remanded him to police custody for three days.
An Assam police team picked him up from Palanpur circuit house after the legislator’s tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nathuram Godse went viral. Twitter has since deleted his tweets.
“This is vendetta politics and this is by PMO,” shouted the 42-year-old dalit leader as he was led into the Kokrajhar courtroom after a 200-km road trip from Guwahati airport.
As Mevani, who is a known critic of the BJP was being escorted, a group of men with placards demanding justice, protested in front of Kokrajhar police station.
Mevani has been charged with criminal conspiracy, outraging religious feelings and provocation that might lead to breach of peace. The legislator’s counsel said that a review petition will be filed in Gauhati High Court on Monday.
Earlier, Banaskantha superintendent of police Akshayraj Makwana said that Assam police had arrested Mevani after informing local cops.
He was taken by road to Ahmedabad city, from where he was flown to Guwahati.
Before his flight, Mevani told reporters that he was being arrested for making an appeal for peace. “I have made an appeal for peace at a time when attempts are being made to incite communal violence in the country,” said Mevani, who claimed that he had not even informed about the contents of the FIR.
“I was not allowed to inform my family members of the arrest. This is in violation of the Supreme Court guidelines where a person is entitled to know the charges he is facing in the FIR,” he said. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that he was not aware of Mevani’s identity or his arrest.
