Gurgaon: More than 2 lakh precautionary doses have been administered in Haryana since the drive was rolled out on January 10. This constitutes just 21% of the 11 lakh people eligible for booster doses in the state.
Haryana has nearly 5.9 lakh senior citizens with comorbidities, 2.5 lakh frontline workers and 2.6 lakh healthcare workers who are eligible for the third shot. As of Wednesday, the state has inoculated 2.3 lakh people with booster shots.
This includes over 1.5 lakh people in the 60-plus category — which means 26% of eligible seniors have taken the dose — as well as 48,855 healthcare workers (19% of the eligible population in this category) and 25,648 frontline workers (10%).
“Only 21% have taken the precautionary shot in Haryana. The numbers are low partly because people may have been infected in the third wave, and partly because many don’t feel the need to take it anymore,” said Dr Virender Ahlawat, state immunisation officer, adding there is no outright hesitancy but no rush either.
Gurgaon, has the highest booster dose coverage in the state at 38.5%. While nearly 1.5 lakh are eligible for third doses, 55,866 have taken the shots.
According to the data, 37,344 (73%) of 51,533 senior citizens have been vaccinated with booster doses. Similarly, 8,854 (19.4%) of 45,616 eligible healthcare workers have got jabs. The coverage is the lowest among frontline workers among the three categories. At present, 6,968 (14.4%) of 48,408 who are eligible in this category have taken it.
Asked why frontline and health workers in Gurgaon haven’t got booster doses even after 44 days of the drive being started, chief medical officer Virender Yadav said, “Many of them were infected with Covid in the third wave. They will get the jab later.”
After Gurgaon, Faridabad (20,192) has administered the maximum number of booster doses in the state, followed by Panchkula (15,497), Ambala (12,214), Rewari(10,361) and Sonipat (7,375). Nuh has given the least third doses so far at 1,293, followed by Fatehabad (2,003), Jind (2,482), Palwal (2,667) and Charkhi Dadri (4,335).
Meanwhile in Gurgaon, 1,390 teenagers in the 15-17 age group were inoculated on Wednesday. In the 18-plus category, 2,177 people took the shots. As many as 421 received booster jabs.
