Haveri: Even as the PSI exam scam is getting murkier with more names coming out following the CID probe, a constable working in Bengaluru celebrated after being shortlisted in the provisional list.
The premature celebration was loaded with style — he got a PSI uniform, complete with a double star, stitched himself, flaunted his “police sub-inspector looks” on a flex at Gudasalakoppa, his village Haveri district, and also addressed a gathering as a PSI. While his friends and relatives honoured Basanagouda at a function, the villagers took him in a procession.
The videos of his speech and flex/ cut-outs put up in the village have gone viral on social media. Many netizens have condemned his act too. His friends were divided about making the “selection” public, let alone taking him in a procession.
Basanagouda Karegoudar, a constable attached to Vivek Nagar police station in Bengaluru, allegedly celebrated “his selection” in violation of the protocol — he should have identified himself as a PSI only after being selected in the final list. Selected PSIs will be made to wear one-star uniform till their training period, after which they can wear two stars.
CID sleuths who are probing the PSI exam scam had summoned Karegoudar on April 20 for questioning. He is one of the 50 people whom CID is questioning in connection with the case.
Sources said Basanagouda has been working as a constable for the last four years. He had written the PSI examination on October 3, 2021. The 545-name shortlist, which includes his name, is mired in controversy.
When contacted, Vijay Kumar Santosh, additional superintendent of police (Haveri), said they have sent a report to the Bengaluru SP. “They will initiate actions against him,” he said. Basanagouda was not available for a comment.
