PATNA: A day after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar attended an Iftar party at RJD leader Rabri Devi‘s residence and sat next to Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav and his elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav, the JD(U) leader on Saturday clarified that the visit had “nothing to do with politics”.
“We all attend such events. My presence has nothing to do with politics at all. Since I was invited for the event, I attended it. We also hold Iftar parties and invite everyone to it,” he told reporters after paying floral tribute to freedom fighter Veer Kunwar Singh on his birth anniversary.
Kumar had on Friday attended a Dawat-e-Iftar organised by Rabri Devi, the former CM at her 10, Circular Road residence in Patna. His presence there sent ripples in the political circles. Kumar was also seen talking to Tejashwi and exchanged pleasantries on the occasion.
Chirag Paswan, who has launched relentless attacks on the JD(U) leader, greeted Kumar by touching his feet. Chirag’s rebellion ahead of the 2020 assembly polls has been singularly blamed by the JD(U) for its losses at the hustings.
Social media was rife with speculation on whether this was a sign of yet another political volte-face by Kumar. The CM’s presence at Tej Pratap Yadav’s wedding a few years ago, when he was photographed hugging Prasad warmly, had led to similar predictions which, however, did not turn out to be correct.
His old ties with the BJP notwithstanding, the Bihar CM has kept the politics of Hindutva at an arm’s distance. Kumar hosted an Iftar party himself last week and has been making it a point to attend similar feasts organised by political peers.
