Salem: A separate ward was opened for transgender people at the Salem government Mohan Kumaramangalam medical college and hospital (SGMKMCH) on Friday.
Dean Dr Valli Sathyamoorthy participated as the chief guest and inaugurated the ward at the hospital. Medical superintendent Dr P V Dhanapal, vice principal of SGMKMCH M Thenmozhi, deputy superintendent Dr Pon A Rajarajan, resident medical officer (i/c) Dr D Sampath Kumar delivered the felicitation address. Urology department associate professor R Rajkumar was also present at the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the dean said that the SGMKMCH already had a separate out-patient ward exclusively for transgenders. “They don’t need to get treatment in the women’s ward,” she said. She added that transgender people were also admitted to the women’s ward if they needed any intensive treatment.
The dean also said that transgender people from neighboring districts including Namakkal, Dhamapuri would also come for treatment at SGMKMCH. He hopes that they will also carry out surgeries for transgenders in the future.
