SILCHAR: A labourer spotted a bomb at an under-construction bridge site at Khulicherra in Assam’s Cachar district near Mizoram border on Saturday, triggering fresh interstate border tension.
Soon, police from nearby Dholai police station and Silchar rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
Additional superintendent of police (Cachar) Subrata Sen told the media that an army bomb squad had rushed to the spot from Masimpur near Silchar. It traced the suspected item packed in a plastic sheet. The squad recovered it and took it to a nearby jungle. A five-feet well was dug, inside which the bomb was kept, he said. Sen added that the team was not qualified enough to identify the nature of the bomb. So, a specialists’ team would travel from Nagaon on Sunday morning and dispose it of.
“As of now it has been kept safely as per procedure,” said the official.
However, a section of local residents suspected that it could be an attempt to derail the bridge construction, undertaken by the Assam government to develop road communication in the remote areas of Cachar district.
