Guwahati: Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore director, Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, has given a clarion call to researchers to focus their research on socially important regional issues for nation building and stop merely imitating the West.
The head of the country’s best research institute was addressing scholars of the northeast on Monday at the North East Research Scholars’ Conclave, organised by the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).
“Only if we address the local issues, can India become a great nation. If we only address the basic issues as formulated in the West and we keep following what the West does, we are not going to achieve greatness,” he said.
Rangarajan said researchers in India often tend to think of problems which are linked to basic and fundamental discoveries. He, however, said equally important are the researches that will have social impact on the region where they reside.
Speaking on ‘Role of Researchers in making India Viswaguru by 2047’, Rangarajan said it’s high time to think beyond basic research. “There are lots of local issues peculiar and unique to the northeast that need to be addressed. These are best done by the institutions located in the northeast, which have the knowledge of the local environment,” he added.
“We have to rely on our local strength, local environment and try to make an impact here. Once you make an impact here (locally), automatically you will have an impact world over,” he said.
