Coimbatore: A 21-year-old man was arrested for attempting to murder his mother-in-law at Anna Nagar near Kannampalayam at Sulur in the early hours of Tuesday.
The Sulur police identified the accused as R Jeevanandam, a resident of Chinnan Street at Ravathur near Sulur. He was an ironer.
An investigation officer said Jeevanandam was in love with a 20-year-old woman, who belonged to a different caste, from Anna Nagar at Kannampalayam and married her six months ago. “They lived together for a month and got separated after that because of differences of opinion. The woman went back to live with her mother Selvi, 46, and father Gopal, 48.”
Meanwhile, the woman became pregnant and Jeevanandam denied responsibility for the same and told his in-laws that she had an extramarital affair. “When Jeevanandam’s father Ramasamy visited the woman’s house two days ago to discuss the issue, Selvi treated him badly and engaged in character assassination of his son. When Jeevanandam came to know about the same, he visited the woman’s house around 2am on Tuesday and argued with her mother. In the heat of a moment, he took a sickle and attacked Selvi on her head and face, before fleeing.”
Neighbours took Selvi to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where her condition is said to be stable. They also informed the Sulur police, who held an inquiry with the family members of Selvi and her neighbours, and arrested Jeevanandam.
