Tata Altroz was launched in the Indian market in January 2022 with two engine options (petrol and diesel), but a sole 5-speed manual gearbox handling the transmission duties on both. Even with the introduction of a new turbo-petrol engine last year, the hatchback has continued to survive with its 5-speed MT for over two years now. In contrast, all its direct rivals are offered with both manual and automatic transmission options.
Now, Tata has finally decided to introduce an optional automatic gearbox for the Altroz. The manufacturer has released a teaser video of the Altroz automatic on its official YouTube channel, and also confirmed that it is set to be launched in the market soon. Tata is yet to reveal which powertrain will benefit from the optional automatic gearbox, but we believe that it will likely be offered with one of the two petrol engines.
The automatic transmission in question could be a DCT (dual-clutch transmission) unit which will likely be reserved for the top-end variant. This will not only give potential Altroz buyers more options to choose from- but also help the car go neck and neck against the likes of Hyundai i20 IVT/DCT, Honda Jazz CVT, Volkswagen Polo TSI AT, as well as the newly launched Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT.
The Altroz is currently offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine putting out 86PS and 113Nm, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol motor that generates 110PS and 140Nm, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that is rated at 90PS/200Nm. Tata retails the premium hatchback at a starting price of Rs 5.99 lakh, going all the way up to Rs 9.69 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom).
