Coimbatore: The Thudiyalur all-woman police arrested a 47-year-old farmer on Friday for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl last month.
Police identified the accused as R Rathinam, from a village near Mettupalayam.
“He had taken a farmland near Annur on lease four years ago. The Class III girl often played near the land. On March 5, he showed the girl pornography videos and sexually assaulted her,” a police officer said.
The girl did not reveal the incident to anyone. “On April 20, a team of primary health care centre staff conducted a medical camp at the school, where the girl was studying. During check-up, the girl told the doctor that she developed abdominal pain often. A staff nurse then questioned the girl, who told her about the incident. The nurse then informed the girl’s parents,” the officer said.
On Friday, based on a complaint from the girl’s parents, police registered a case against the accused under Sections 9(m) (aggravated sexual assault – whoever commits sexual assault on a child below twelve years) read with 10 (punishment for aggravated sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, and arrested him.
