Gurgaon: A 32-year-old man returning home was killed after a tractor speeding down the wrong side of the road allegedly crashed into his bike in Farukhnagar on Wednesday night.
It was another life lost to scant regard for traffic rules on the roads of Gurgaon, where wrong-side driving and speeding have become a menace for both motorists and pedestrians.
This is despite the Gurgaon traffic police regularly cracking down on errant drivers. In fact, more than 400 people lost their lives in road accidents in the city last year.
The latest fatal collision occurred around 8pm on Wednesday. Amit, who was not wearing a helmet, fell off the bike and sustained serious head injuries. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
One of his relatives, Vijay Pal, who had been tailing him on another two-wheeler, told TOI that it was a head-on collision in Farukhnagar’s Khumpur area. “The tractor sped away after the accident,” he said.
Based on his complaint, a case was registered against the unknown tractor driver under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (death in accident) of IPC at Farukhnagar police station.
In fact, as per the data shared by the Gurgaon traffic police, a whopping 2.47 lakh challans were issued in 2021, of which 32,618 were for wrong-side driving alone.
On Thursday, the DCP (traffic) held a meeting with his men and asked them to analyse the cause of accidents and manage traffic keeping those reasons in mind.
